No More Ladies' Night.... - CLICK HERE for the Cooking Forum Index

Ladies' nights 'discriminatory'

"A New Jersey official has ruled that ladies' nights are unfair and
discriminate against men.

Offering free nightclub entrance and cut-price cocktails just for women
is illegitimate, the official ruled.

Senior civil rights official Frank Vespa-Papaleo said eradicating
discrimination must remain more important than business interests.

The decision, which carries the weight of a court ruling, could be
applied across the US state.

The New Jersey official agreed with David Gillespie, a customer of a bar
who claimed he was unfairly discriminated against because his gender
prevented him from taking advantage of the discount.

'Puzzled'

The owner of the Coastline bar and restaurant in Cherry Hill, the
establishment at the centre of the case, said he was surprised by the
ruling, but confirmed there would be no more ladies' nights for the
foreseeable future.

"I was puzzled," Chris Mourtos told BBC News Online.

"In 26 years of having ladies' nights on Wednesdays, we have only ever
had one complaint. One complaint - and he won!"

He said that trying to balance the promotions was not an option.

"We tried a guys' night years ago, but nobody turned up. No women came
so the guys didn't stick around."

I wonder if this will be the end of senior discounts, family
discounts, two-for-one, or other such discounts?

Senior discounts are granted by the Federal government. Family
discounts apply to certain large parties or large orders - I've
never seen one apply specifically to husband/wife/2-kids.

(What isn't covered are youth discounts (movies, for example).
Nothing allows youth discounts and that should be considered age
discrimination as well).

Federal law prohibits gender discrimination. I think such a
ruling is just and should be applied Federally.

With that, so should senior discounts.

Not for everything.

Not unless they're willing to deal with all of the above types of
discrimination.

The Federal Government offers all sorts of discounts to elderly.
Heck, they even give them money (Social Security).

You mean like Hooters waiters, or Chipendale dancers? :-)

Still, the ladies night seems more arbitrary. Granted, they're
trying to bring in more chicks to attract to paying men, but I
still don't think it would stand up in court.

Could an apartment complex get away with giving rental discounts
to women only?

Nah! I suspect the ruling will be overturned very quickly.

This is a surprise to me. Until today, I had not heard about
this ruling ... and I live about a five minute drive from the
Coastline Bar in Cherry Hill. I have never been inside that
bar before, but I have passed by it many times; its right
near a Hooter's restaurant

The feds also offer special grants to women who start their
own business, grants to certain minorities to go into business.
Bush recently signed a bill that offers discounted interest
rates to latinos who are about to buy their first home. Then
there are numerous discounts for children such as reduced
entrance fees for kids into government sponsored museums
and that huge break on taxes that the government gives to
people if they procreate.

I suspect you're wrong, but we'll just have to wait to see what
a court says about this case.

Yeah - I guess so. That *should* be discrimination, too. Seems
white, male Americans are the minorities nowdays. At least as far
as benefits so.

Depends on how they present the case, I guess. There's a lot of
angles to approach this from.

The Federal government gives priority to small, female owned and
minority owned businesses when bidding to provide products or
services. Sure helped when my business was bidding.
