We are enjoying unseasonably cool weather - it might hit 41 tonight - 61
is normal. This is perfect canning weather! This evening I made
strawberry jam (berries were $4/quart at the farmers market) and have
more of that in my future tomorrow. I think I know where to find some
ripe mangoes for a combination jam.
Then I made some raspberry jam from Sister Julie's frozen berries,
thawed and drained. The juice will become ruby red jelly on the morrow
and the fruit made jam. I pressed some of the cooked, hot jam through a
rather coarse sieve (all that pulp made for really seedy stuff) to get
rid of some of the seeds. I jarred and processed it and had about 2-3
tbsp left in a small container.
Here's why it's good to be me: I toasted some good bread, smeared it
with butter, and then put my freshly made raspberry jam on it. OK, on
THEM. I won't tell you how many pieces I had, but 5's not enough and 7
is too many. Supper sucked. The toast with jam was really, really
good. Too bad you're not so lucky! "-)

Yep, I got to experience some of that this week and it sure beat yucky humid

Sounds like heaven! Isn't it great to know you're the luckiest person with

Dear Barbara, Yes, it is good to be you, especially today.
Have a Happy Birthday and enjoy the day. I give you time off from
making jam, so just relax and do something fun.

Here's why it's good to be me: I made a salsa from a perfectly-ripe papaya,
some cilantro, finely chopped onion, fresh lemon juice, and a habaņero
chile. To counter the spiciness, I made an Indian raita of yogurt, mint, and
cucumber. While the flavors were mingling, I made tostones (twice-fried
plantains). Then I seared a dozen big scallops in a cast-iron skillet. My
girlfriend brought over some freshly-baked French bread (from our local
Safeway) and also made Singapore Slings and ginger-peach iced tea.
Supper didn't suck at all.

Tee hee. Thanks. I need to get some apricots for apricot jam. They
were on sale last week but I turned that 5# into apricot butter.
When I crawled out of the sack this morning I found two bouquets of
posies and my coffee cup awaiting me at the coffee pot. It was 6:45
a.m. This explains why Rob asked the other day what Cub's store hours
are -- he'd gone there early this morning to get the flowers. I've been
telling him for years to stop buying overpriced goods at Bachman's.
These are great - roses and baby's breath, daisies, and this godawful
sparkly red stuff -- can't wait to show that to Chris: I acquired some
of that a couple years ago and stuck it in the garden dirt, took a
picture, and had Chris see "what was growing in my garden." I'm going
to tell him it turned out to be a perennial. :-)

Happy, happy to you! I hope your day of gambling-for-all goes better than
it did last year!
So...do you have an inventory/price list of all your jamming that's up for
sale this year, if any at all? And do you ship internationally? (Not as
far as Japan, but Canada, at least). I'm interested in fruit butters, in
particular (apple if you have it, but others, too!), though I do love your
Boozeberry Jam, too. And maybe the famous mango-kiwi creation. Maybe I'll
replace some of the stuff I stole from...oops...I mean was given by my
mother. :-)

My SIL is bad luck and I have no self-discipline. I always feel like
it's my duty to stay until I'm broke -- unless I'm about $60 ahead or
something. I did get a free lunch out of it, though, from her. We went
on Wednesday. And on Tuesday with a different friend. I'm broke, but
I've still got another friend to play with (might have to wait a couple
weeks, though.) I'd have been fine on Tuesday if I'd come home after
lunch there. :-/

Not yet. The games have only just begun.I do have my case of

A girl after my own heart. There's more apricot butter in my future, I
suspect. I actually haven't done apple butter in a few years. Peach
butter is good. Plum butter is awesome, but I'll have to see if I get
any plums from my tree. It's dying.

Happy birthday, Barb! In your honor, I am posting the latest variation
of the ONE TRUE COBBLER--melba! I had some fresh nectarines and frozen
raspberries I needed to use up the other day, so this was the result.
1/2 c. butter
1 c. flour
2 c. sugar, divided
1 T. baking powder
pinch salt
1 c. milk
2 c. sliced peaches or nectarines (nectarines need not be peeled)
1 T. lemon juice
4 c. fresh or frozen raspberries
dash cinnamon or nutmeg (optional; I used a little cinnamon)
Preheat oven to 375. Melt butter in 13" x 9" baking dish in oven while
it's heating. Combine flour, 1 c. sugar, baking powder, & salt; add
milk, stirring just until moistened. Pour batter over melted butter in
pan. DO NOT STIR. Bring remaining 1 c. sugar, peach slices, and lemon
juice to boil over high heat, stirring constantly. Gently fold in
raspberries, then pour over batter. DO NOT STIR. Sprinkle with
cinnamon or nutmeg, if used. Bake 40-45 minutes until golden brown.
Serve warm or cool. Serves 10 in theory, fewer in reality.

Well, I'll be! Thanks, Sheldon. Dimitri's bringing me some dried
California aps in a month.
I'm back from lunch with Niece Patty, and from grocery shopping -- 10#
of fresh aps. I'll deal with them in a coupla days. I should be
cleaning strawberries, but the possibility of a nap is a stronger pull
right now.

I don't know...after the $400 airfare (plus tax) it might be cheaper to

I worked with his neighbor. Neighbor gave him a jar of my strawberry
rhubarb jam for Christmas 2002. Guy emails me wanting more. I put off
replying to the email. On January 6 or 7 of 2003 I was replying to his
email whilst having the 10:00 news on in the background. I mean I WAS

WAS ON! He's a weenie prof at the U and serves as political consultant

Dunno. A little downy woodpecker moved in a few years ago; I don't know

Oh, my. I'm surprised you remember. It's been several years since that
was done. No, I'm resigned to the tree's slow death. Planting another
doesn't interest me, either.

Reminds me...
One of the last things I made before giving up wheat for good was a
batch of your brownies. If'n ya hafta go, go in style!
Recently I've discovered that I can digest spelt, which is an ancient
variety of wheat. (I'm wheat-intolerant, not gluten-intolerant, and
spelt has either none or little enough of the protein which causes me
problems that I can handle it.)
Sooo... I foresee a batch of Barb's Orgasmic (Spelt!!) Brownies in my
future!
Wheee!

Happy Birthday Barb!
We have had local strawberries from three different farms for about a
month. Sweet cherries of three varieties for a couple of weeks. The
first raspberries appeared on Wednesday. And today, the first sour
cherries.
We are still waiting for local apricots and peaches. We did cheat and
eat a few California apricots a week ago, but now we'll hold out for
local.

:-) I think part of the joy of Holy Land is browsing through the aisles.
When we went there we just picked things up that looked interesting and put
them in our cart. That's how we managed to spend about $60 our first visit
there. Ouch! The second time around we were a bit more frugal--only spent
$40.
