I'm up to 160 pounds. I'm geting fat. I've never been fat. I quit smoking
after my surgery and everything tastes good. My hair is shiny. they'll be

Hi, DoggieMichael, it is good to see that you are feeling better and
better as the days pass by.
If you are up to 160 lbs, how much did you weigh when you came out of
the hospital? Also, don't forget that you are still restricting your
physical activities. You are probably doing the right thing and
eating tasty and nourishing foods in order to get well and fit as soon
as possible.
Have you been for a check up since you came home? What did the
doctor(s) say? Until you are told to watch your food intake, go ahead
and enjoy everything. You were deprived of so much for a long time.
All the best, M

My guess is that the important piece of information is quitting smoking.
It is not unusual for a person's weight to shoot up after quitting no
matter what the diet. I'd get advice from a source that takes that into
account. They'll probably say that exercise is important and that
losing weight under these circumstances will be very very hard. To the
best of my knowledge, it is still healthier to be a fat non-smoker than
a thin smoker, but I'd be curious about that.

You might want to figure out a way to get it under control now. It's
much, much harder to lose weight once it's gained.
Exercise, watch what you eat. Whatever it takes!

I weighed in at about 145 pounds. My ideal weight is 155lbs.

Yes, I've had a post op. All went well. I got staples out etc. I go back on
Wednesday. Hopefully the final check up.

I pretty much have to go back to low fat. Not as crazy as before. More

I have to go back to the lower fat foods. My cholesterol and fat have to be
controlled due to my heart condition. However, I'm not going to go crazy
with it like I did last time. I made myself sick by eating practically no
fat. Is the South Beach Diet fairly decent fat wise? I'm about 5 lbs
overweight right now and do not want to go any higher. Moderating is not a
good option for me because I won't do it. I'm willing to take a look at it.
This latest carb craze is not for me.

I know nothing about the South Beach Diet, but Weight-Watchers is well-
balanced among the various food categories. I consider it relatively low
in fat. It was also recommended to my SO following arterial bypass
surgery. Calculating Points with WW includes knowing and using the fat
grams. Most dieticians consider a low fat diet to include 28-30 grams of
fat daily, equally distributed throughout the day. The recommended
average for a normal diet falls somewhere within 50-60 grams of fat
daily. The average person not paying attention to their consumption of
fat and eating the usual fast foods along with other foods frequently
consumes 150-200 grams of fat daily. This is clearly an example of what
we don't know hurting us.

It's a low-carb diet, at first. But unlike Atkins, you limit fat
intake as well. Plenty of olive oil, eggs, nuts, and avocados, but no
rice or bread initially. And you have to stay away from fatty meats.
I've adapted cooking styles somewhat, dropping butter and substituting
much-reduced stocks for example.
D's mother is diabetic, has been since she was 11 or so. As far as I
can tell, the South Beach diet is very much like a very good diabetic
diet with much reduced carbohydrate intake and reasonable fats.
D has lost significant weight so far and claims to feel much better.
And I get to cook ribs now and then, too -- even if they're not
exactly on the approved list.

The South Beach Diet was written by a heart doctor for his cardiac
patients. It distinguishes between good and bad fats, and good and bad
carbs. Thus, it encourages olive oil or other heart-healthy fats
(anything with omega-3 fatty acids, for example) but limits animal fats.
And encourages 'good' carbs such as whole grains but discourages simple
carbohydrates.

I recommend lots of vegetables. (This from a woman who hates raw veggies.)
Not a problem if you put a little butter on them although, after several
years of using the stuff my mom highly recommends Benecol spread. She uses
it on veggies and her morning toast.
However, I'm not going

Not healthy! These no carb things are... don't get me started. I have too
many friends who swear by it but not me.
Balance, Michael. You know how to do it :) And walk... walk, walk and then
walk some more. Maybe buy a bicycle :) Chase the cat. Run from the cat.
LOL
I am the last person you will find in a gym and I'm pretty darned fit for a
middle aged gal. There is *one* Twin Cities rfc'r [you know who you are!]
who may be able to attest to that :) Of course, he's not a doctor (nor does
he play one on TV) but he can tell you, this gym-phobic gal isn't fat. She
just walks a lot. She also made a fool of herself dancing at Keegan's one
night, but what the heck. Life is for living. I think it's something I
waited too long to figure out.

You and Wayne have given good advice. I'm not much of a diet person. I need
some structure in my food habits and I'm going to look into the South Beach
and Weight Watchers diets. Right now my cat is screaming for her Max Cat
Nutro diet.

I'm on a calorie counting diet (see alt.support.diet), but if I had
to chose a more regimented plan, I'd go for either of the above. They
seem very sensible, nutrition-wise. Besides, from what little I know
about low-carbing, it isn't for someone who only needs to lose a few
pounds. Good for you, for taking control of it now, and good luck!

Going on any one diet never did work for me but what I'm doing now is
working. I have made some rules for myself. Eat a regular breakfast
(usually cereal) and anything I want for lunch. But after lunch only
vegetables or fruit....nothing else. Only eat at the kitchen table....never
in front of the TV. Get some exercise every day.
I feel much better and no more indigestion in the middle of the night.

From what I've read about the South Beach Diet, it seems like Phase
three is a very good and sensible diet (not as in weight loss "diet",
but the sum of your food intake "diet"). One of the only things I
question about his "good" and "bad" fat labeling is his label of
animal/saturated fats as bad for you without a decent explanation.
After reading the book, I think he just labels them bad because they
are saturated and tribal knowledge states that saturated fats increase
serum cholesterol levels which increase artherosclerosis. What puzzles
me is could a cardiologist who invented a system for detecting
artherosclerosis plaque buildup levels not be up to date on the recent
research that shows that our anti-saturated fat campaign isn't doing
us any good and in fact saturated fats do not contribute to
cholesterol build up (and cholesterol may not be a good indicator of
artherosclerosis)?
I dunno. My fiance is following the South Beach Diet with the addition
of daily egg consumption, butter, and whole fat dairy consumption.
(Dairy products with fat contain lots of good fatty acids and minerals
that is difficult to obtain elsewhere. They aid digestion and your
body's ability to handle oxidation reactions as well as microbial and
viral attack.) So, I guess she's not really on the South Beach Diet -
but it seems to be working. She's not getting fat on the additional
saturated fat at least.
