Hi Bill,

I am definitely a fan of Trimbach wines in general, but specifically, the
Riesling CF-E and the Gewurz. "Cuvée des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre" which
are standouts in this isolated spot - where any Alsatian wine of any sort is
a rarity.

Schlumberger and Hugel make it down in small quantities, but I have never
seen any Zind Humbrecht wines in NZ.

I have never tried the Clos Sainte Hune - I have never seen it available
downunder - so enjoy a glass for me with your salad.

Agreed. I love Clos St. Hune, but can only afford it from others' cellars (that
said, it is one of the more affordable of the truly great wines of the world-
but still beyond my means).

As to Cuvee Frederic Emile, I love this wine. Though the current release, 1999,
is a softer easier version. I had a 375 in a restaurant, haven't bought more,
but might if I see at a good price for earler drinking. In any case other
recent vintages have been delicious -the '98s and '96s are now put away for a
LONG time. Luckily I bought the '97s before a WS award shot the price up, a
bit atypical but still delicious. Still need a few years, though probably never
going to be a 15-20 yr wine like some CFEs.

My favorite recent Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre is the '98, still available in
states for reasonable prices. The rare Gew. that I think needs cellar time (but
it's so tasty now it's hard to resist).

Too bad about the Z-H and the CLos St Hune. They can be found online but I'm
not sure of the international shipping policy of many internet auction/retail
outlets. The Z-H is a deep rich style and more overt than Trimbach but
delicious in a different way. The make some terific VT's and SGN's. Clos St.
Hune is a bit more restrained and perhaps more delicate than the Cuvee F-E but
it ages gracefully and gains depth and complexity with time.

How do you stack up the two? In Riesling , I give a Trimbach the edge. To me
the best Z-Hs are the late-harvest Pinot Gris bottlings and the
Gewurztraminers. In general I find Z-H to be occasional change of paces, but I
can drink Trimbachs quite often.

I suppose a lot of it depends on ones taste preference but I prefer Trimbach.
I think that you are spot on regarding the late harvest stuff from Z-H. In
general I find Z-H produces wines that are very close at times to being
over-the-top with a rich, unctuos mouthfeel and deep color and intensity in
flavor. Most of my Z-H is late harvest Pinot Gris or Gewurtz. I like the Z-H
Clos Jebsal and Clos Windsbuhl Pinot Gris and the Clos Hauserer Riesling.
Their Clos St. Urbain Rangen de Thann Riesling is top notch Riesling and ranks
right up there with Trimbach's Clos St. Hune and Cuvee F-E. The VT Clos St.
Urbain is very tasty and has the ability to match well with so many foods
literally from soup to nuts.
