This Amador county bottling has always been great. Lately they changed the
appellation to "Sierra Foothills". Pretty much the same bottle, but a
little more Burgundian. This Amador Zin is mouth filling. Think cherry
coca-cola with some brambly blackberry fruit. A smooth red. Comfortable
tannins (for a wine that is drinking now) , No rough edges.
A hands downs winner at 10 USD.

I haven't seen any of their wines lately, but their 1976 Barbera was one of
the best I've ever tasted!

I'm looking forward to seeing how Trinchero (the owner of Montevina)
integrates the newly-acquired Folie a Deux label into their holdings.
There seems to be a great opportunity to integrate the Folie a Deux
Amador Zin programs into Montevina (doubtlessly retaining the
labels), and one can't argue with the better distribution of
Trincheros labels. It might mean more, better Amador wine for
more people.

Dana,
Do you know if the Trincheros will keep Scott Harvey on at Folie a
Deux? It would be a great shame IMO if they don't...

I hadn't realized that Monteviņa was owned by the Trinchero family. I don't
think it used to be.
IIRC, the Trincheros also own the Geyserville vineyard in Sonoma County that
sources some of Ridge's top Zins, and Ridge always made a hell of a lot
better wine from their fruit than the owners!

According to Wine Spectator, the Trincheros bought Montevina
in 1989.

Is this a comment on White Zin or on the winemaking ability of
Trinchero staff?
'Cause I wouldn't discount the latter in the slightest. Bob
Trinchero made a comment along those lines to me last year in
person.
On a side note, I must say that the little contact I've had with the
Trincheros has impressed me considerably. They were the chairs for
last year's Napa Valley Wine Auction, and I was surprised when
Evelyn Trinchero came wandering around Friday morning at Meadowood
to personally talk to the volunteers, just to say hello and thanks
for volunteering. Further, at the Volunteer Appreciation party,
the Trincheros truly spent the evening with the volunteers. They
really seem to be plain nice people with a great sense of humor.
