Well, I just dragged out my grandkid's copies of the HP series and started
listening very carefully. In the Sorcerer's Stone, the first to say
Hermione is Hermione herself. She says HER-my-nee. The second is Maggie
Smith, as British as a lorry full of crumpets, and she also says HER-my-nee.
Hey, I listened 10 times each. There is no doubt. There is no hidden 'o'.
The next to utter the name is Harry, himself. He clearly enunciates the 4th
syllable ...HER-my-o-nee, even though the 'o' comes out more like an 'uh'.
There is no doubt and all 3 of these people are British!
Just like there's the King's English and then there's Cockney, I'm sure
there are all variations of the pronunciation. No one should be surprised.
Hell, we have a president that says 'nuculer', ferchrissakes! All that PC
crud aside, I never heard the name Hermione before the HP series. I think
it's an absolutely delightful name and I might have named my own daughter
that if I'd known about it. And if I had, I'd definitely pronounce it very
clearly, HER-my-o-nee (which means, "Yes, I know were the fork goes ...and I
know where I'm gonna put if you don't back off ...your lordship! [seg]").

For the record, the first president to say it that way was Dwight D.
Eisenhower. Maybe it's a Republican schtick.

But until the HP movies came out, I had no idea of how to pronounce
it...
