Moosewood - CLICK HERE for the Cooking Forum Index

I was up in the Finger Lakes area last week for vacation. While there,
we visited the famous Moosewood vegetarian restaurant in Ithaca. It
was fabulous. They don't have a regular menu per se, but a constantly
changing list of 3 or 4 specials. There was one fish special and the
rest were either vegetarian or vegan. I had a Moroccan stew of
couscous smothered with seasonal vegetables in a tomato base that was
perfectly seasoned, and a glass of local Riesling. Awesome. The only
problem was that it was confusing to enter. They were doing
construction out front and the sidewalk was cordoned off. Patrons
could only enter via the adjacent building and through the underground
shops. We sat in the outside seating area and amused ourselves
watching people walk back and forth looking for a way inside, just as
we did. :^)

Finger Lakes area has some of the best Riesling on the East Coast.

I was surprised to discover this. Apparently, the climate there is
similar to climates in some areas of Europe where Riesling originates.
Most of the East Coast wines that I have tasted in past years were on
the sweet side - not at all to my liking. In the past few years,
however, I have tasted wines from Virginia, North Carolina, New York,
and even Canada that have been surprisingly excellent. Most of the
wines we tasted in the Finger Lakes region were also very good. We
even stopped at one winery (Four Chimneys) that produced certified
organic wines that are naturally low in sulphates. They were "okay,
not great" IMO. Our favorite Finger Lakes wineries were Wagner, Red
Newt, Castel Grisch, and Fox Run. They all produced excellent
Rieslings and other wines.

This is good to hear.

I visited them about 2 years ago and the menu they had the day I was
there was not vegan friendly.

Lovely restaurant, but I could have gotten a better meal in my home city.

It is good to read that Moosewood is getting with the times ( most true
vegetarians in the west tend to be vegans ).
