Greets,
I am interested in learning more about wines. I enjoy red wines,
merlot, syrah and especially cab. I've limited myself to a few of the
less expensive wines, such as Charles Shaw (not as good to me as some
enthusiasts suggest but I have mostly bought the cab-should try the
merlot again), Emeril, a few others. I'm interested in wines that are
locally available and less than $10 / bottle.
I don't have a very developed wine palate. I just know when I like
it.
Are there any sites or recommendations for some good wines that are in
this price range? I have tried some more expensive bottles (names
escape me) that weren't as good as an average bottle of Two Buck
Chuck.
I don't have any particular preference. I love to cook, so if you
have a recommendation that goes particularly well with a certain
cuisine, I'm game.
Thanks for suggestions,
Matt

These are cheap and pleasant:
Woodbridge Cabernet or Zinfandel(red NOT white)
Glen Ellen Cabernet
Avia Riesling

Some suggestions off the top of my head for good sub-$10 wines:
* Bogle (reds in particular)
* Rosenblum Vintner's Cuvee Zinfandel - it will make you a zin fan
* Gascon - Argentinian Malbec (sorry, can't remember the producers
name)
* Just about anything Spanish these days, some great values
* Try Australian Shiraz, it usually has a slight sweetness that
appeals to the new drinker, Rosemount is a good bet, I'm not a real
yellow tail fan but give it a try too.
* Smoking Loon by Sebastiani and Sons isn't bad
* McManis makes some pretty good central valley California wines
* You like Cab - Villa Mt. Eden has a $10 Napa Cab called Tall Trees
that's pretty good, but generally, I'd be wary of sub-$10 cabernet,
there just isn't too much of it that's worth drinking, IMO.
* Almost forgot a fave - Bonny Doon (under their Ca'del Solo label)
makes Big House Red which is a GREAT value. Joe Bob says check it
out!
