Hello;
Yesterday, with lamb chops and grilled veggies, we decided to open a
Croze-Hermitage from Jaboulet, Le Jalet 2000. According to Hugh Johnsson,
depending on quality, the CH of 2000 should either be in their prime or just
beginning to drink well, so we thought it would be OK.
When Xina opened the bottle, the first smell that greeted her was of SO2,
quite unpleasant, but, thought we, this may clear up with aeration. The wine
was decanted for mebbe 45 minutes.
WHen we next poured it into our nice big quality red wine glass (SEK 95 [1]
for a pack of six at IKEA), it stilled smelt unpleasant. Burnt rubber,
possibly, but I´ve tasted Cote-Roti w Mike Tommassi which good guy Mike told
me had this character, and this smelt nothing like it. Something doggedly,
unpleasantly animal about it - not the smoked cold cuts I tend to associate
with Syrah. On palate, acidity was near to aggressive, fruit was dead. The
wine was also slightly turbid.
Needless to say, this wine went back inot the bottle for possible use in a
sauce, or daub, and a bottle of Chateau Le Cheap vaguely Bordeaux (Malesan)
was procured and imbibed without prejudice.
Now, my question is, can anyone tell me what has gone wrong with this wine?
Didn´t smell corked - we are quite sensitive to TBA, particularly Xina - but
I do not for a moment believe that this is the way it should be.

Tom Stevenson in the New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopaedia says
"Burnt Rubber. This is a serious wine fault created by the reaction
between ethyl alcohol and hydrogen sulphide, another wine fault, which
produces a foul-smelling compound called ethylmercaptan."
His advice on finding such is to take the wine back for a full refund.

Can'r really answer your question, but I have had a similar CH that I
returned to the wine merchant and was pronounced "corked" by the shop.
I was not convinced it was TCA though. The "animal" nature in my CH
was something like rotting shellfish IMO - the smell you can get on
the beach. Zero fruit and very acidic - perhaps the acidity was so
dominant simply because the other flavours were shot.

That's expensive. We use IKEA's "SVALKA" red wines glass @ EUR 0.51!

Had that yesterday evening with a Blaufränkisch 2000 Grand Réserve
"Juwel" from Stefan Lang in Neckenmarkt, Burgenland. For me
clearly a sign of a defective cork, although not TCA (which isn't
very new to me, since science has found 5 or 6 other unpleasant
tainting substances that come from cork, although less frequent
than TCA).

This seems about it. Unfortunately, since I bought it in Avoriaz in the
French Alps, it will be a bit of a chore bringing it back ...

At the summer house I'm using the IKEA "OPTIMAL" 55cl white wine glass, for
my reds(!), at EUR 2.25... they work beautifully!
But these "SVALKA" 30cl glasses do look good for testing purposes!

Sounds like the wine had a case of mercaptan gone to disulfide that was not
adequately addressed prior to bottling. (The rubber smell is the tipoff.)
I'd take it back for another bottle of equivalent.

They are even endorsed by the Society of Tastevins, at least the Helsingborg
chapter. (That includes the splinter group previously referred to).
We use the 'Svalka' for tasting, and at home for the whites - for reds we do
prefer a glass with a larger bowl, either the slightly tulip shaped here
mentioned, or, for Burgundies, big balloon shaped glasses (they can hold 78
cl according to the text on the box), which are, in this context,
outragouesly expensive at SEK 98 for a pair. These glasses are of course
kept locked in, for reasons of security. Special arrangements ahve been made
in our home insurance.
IKEA is not so bad, really. Prices are a pittance in comparison with Riedel,
and it is even easier to spell.

Pronunciation OTOH is as variable as Riedel. Over on this side of the
North Sea it is usually pronounced as an English word, stressing the
E.
And I have never had a set of Riedel glasses with a bolt missing.
IKEA glasses *are* self-assembly I presume.

I´ve had worse. We bought a case summer of 2002 after having it in France,
and after resting for two years in our cellar, they drink OK on a Thursday
evening. A bit green, and no complexity, but I wouldn´t go so far as to call
them unredeemable swill ;). Most likely I will not buy any more - later
vintages have been bland. You get better value for money from Languedoc,
some of them at least.
