Last night I led a group of 7 others on a vinuous
journey to the stars .. for some of us we met our
maker ..
While I've been privileged to have tasted some of
the greatest and rarest wines ever produced , no
other single tasting event will leave such an
indelible impression as the 10bts of some of the
finest wines that exist on this planet today that
we had over Dinner last night ..
We started with a rather closed bottle of the
recently released 1990 Krug .. so tightly wound,
tough as nails and completely unyielding .. yet
the second bottle (from the same ctn) was so
fresh, fruity and such a glorious drop .. the 1969
Krug collection must have tasted like this when
it was 14 years old ..
While the 1978 DRC Le Montrachet would always
be the singular expression of chardonnay for me,
the 1990 Louis Latour Le Montrachet last night
was equally compelling ; just not so fine .. yet
with what else we were about to experience, was
a brilliant drop of liquid gold .. still so youthful
with at least a decade ahead of it ..
Next came the great Aussie shirazes from 1990 ..
Grange & Hill of Grace .. both decanted 4 hours
previously .. and what a treat .. everything you
desire in a shiraz and more .. even another 4hrs
later, I thought the Grange still too young but the
Hill of Grace was simply ravishing .. pure fruit,
syrupy, glycerine-laden with silky tannins ..
From the Northern Rhone, 2 of the finest Hermitage
: the 1990 La Chapelle and Chave's signature-piece
... though very attractive on the nose, the La Chapelle
was not as multi-dimensional and complex a wine
as the Chave .. the roasted tannins will certainly
keep them both fresh & vibrant for another 30 years
Guigal's 3 single-vineyard Cote Roties were simply
mind-boggling .. while they are all babies, the 90 La Landonne had such a
ferocity .. you could hear it roar !! ..the wine scorched my palate .. with
less than 10,000bts produced, it made me cry .. somehow I could never taste
a more perfect wine ..the 90 La Mouline .. a
concentrated richness and intense perfume that has
no peers .. and the 90 La Turque .. voluptuously
textured, a truly hedonistic drop of red juice ..
Spell-bound and mesmerised by the sheer opulence
of the wines, we couldn't believe that the 1990 Ch.
Climens could be so enthralling .. pure nectar ..
in my view, 1990 Yquem I had in Jakarta was no
match ... the Climens could live almost forever ..
Driving back at 2am, couldn't help realising that
there hasn't been a finer evening in my life .. all
10 wines without exception with- stood every test
by every palate present .. can there ever be greater
wines to drink ?
