Sort of OT: Whitening kitchen tile grout. - CLICK HERE for the Cooking Forum Index
Curt Nelson
Hi everybody:

I'm a rookie at getting my kitchen counter tile grout clean and white again
and I didn't know where else to turn.

If anyone's got any ideas, including other newsgroups for advice, I'm all
ears.

Thanx in advance. My countertops are grossing me out and I can't take it
anymore...

Hasta,
Curt Nelson

I'd try bleach for starters.

Take the top layer of grout off, using a screwdriver, then reapply a new
layer.

Bleach?

If all else fails, there is a special whitening paste available.
Try your local home center.

Stop into a "Dollar" store in your area and look for a product called
Mean Green. That stuff will clean most anything, including break dust
off of wheels. (which is a royal pita)

Make sure that you rinse it well though.

Why don't they make mouse flavored cat food?

It's probably mold, so try bleach, as kili said. If that doesn't work, go
to your local hardware store and ask there.

Tile countertops are what's gross, get rid of them.

Hola. In the US, Chlorox makes a Bleach Pen, with this use in mind.
Give it a try.

I'm going to build a small countertop from concrete this fall. I'll let you
know how it goes.

Don't know how dirty they are, but I tried an Ajax/water paste and a
scrub brush on mine. Worked just fine.

Whichever method you use, once the grout is clean it should be sealed with
grout sealer, or you'll be back where you started.

Zep makes an excellent grout cleaner. Home Depot carries it.

A bit of bleach rubbed with one of those Mr Clean Magic Erasers. They work,
but don't ask me why. They are merely speaker insulation and fall apart with
use.

Terrazzo countertops are wonderful.

Any idea what sort of concrete the pros use? Is it the normal mix, or
do they make a lighter mix? I can imagine
pouring a mix filled with stryrofoam balls or mica or cellulose or
something light, then doing a skin coat with something like the redimix
products used for, well, skin coating.
Are you going to go natural color, or pigment the top?

Greg, here's an online version of one guy's experience:
http://www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/...ccounter-b.shtm

It's the regular mix and needs to be reinforced. I'm going to do this in
the shop and then install it. It's only a 3 foot section of counter, but
I'm still going to follow the guy in the link's advice on doing a small
practice piece first. I'm going to go with pigment and polish the top to
kind of a semi-glossy finish.

Oh, I also have some adult supervision to call on for this!

Wow - that article made me want to _hide_ under a counter. Sounds like
chieslling your own granite would be easier (not that you're a
chiseler.)

Good luck.

Those Mr. Clean thingies really work well, but are a bit pricey, especially
as they do fall apart pretty quickly. So, are they really speaker
insulation, and if so, could I buy a big wad of it cheaply?

Thanks,

Susan
