LA area: Going to Bristol Farms - CLICK HERE for the Cooking Forum Index

I'll be driving from San Diego to Sacramento later this month, and I plan to
stop off at one of the Bristol Farms stores as I go through the LA
megalopolis. I'm familiar with the one in Manhattan Beach, but I'm not
dead-set on going to that one on this trip. So for residents of the area,
I've got these questions:

1. Does any particular Bristol Farms store stand out above the others? Or
are they all pretty much alike?

2. Are there any must-get items there? My current shopping list only has
Balsamico Tradizionale and the Buona Forchetta Hazelnut-Sage Filoncino. I'm
sure I'll stumble across many other wonderful items, but is there anything
in particular I should seek?

I can't really answer your questions, but I do shop at the Bristol Farms in
Westwood now and then when I am going up to UCLA. It is on Westwood Blvd.
between Santa Monica and Wilshire. The parking isn't too bad. Just a few
blocks off I-405. It is a lot easier to get to when heading south on
Westwood as BF is on the west side of the street. It is the only Bristol
Farms I've been to, but it seems nice to me!

P.S. If you travel the 405 and have time, you might want to check Surfas in
Culver City, and that large restaurant supply place in Van Nuys. I can't
think of the name of it just now, but Dimitri would know.

Going north on 5, take the Crown Valley exit its not far past the San
Clemente checkpoint in Orange County- its on the northeast corner there
in the 3 story mall right at that exit.

We try whatever samples are available and get whatever is on sale.
Lots of fancy things in the deli case but as far as staples, I get them
at Trader Joes...BF is more expensive on the same things TJ
has...(certain brands of soda, bottled water, some chocolates, some
teas...exact same brands are less at TJ...but TJ does not have a deli
or fish or meat counter...so I look for items on sale there that are
not the same as TJ. Went ther eon Jan 1 and Brogiere's egg nog in
glass bottles was at a bit less price...and some of the breads and
shrimp. It is a new week, so sales items change....

In other words, take the first Crown Valley exit and screech across 3
lanes of traffic to make a left at the next light. Pull into the
parking structure and immediately go to the parking area on the left
in front of the store.

This is a pretty fair sized Bristol Farms. You can get all sorts of
out of season produce that doesn't have that "trucked green" taste, as
well as $$$ caviar that is to die for, about 4 kinds of prosciutto,
hard-to-find wine and even live crab (call ahead - they don't always
have it). Do *not*, however, buy from their meat dept. It is hideously
expensive and not worth the price, IMHO. Stater Bros. does a better
job of first-rate meats (as long as you can pick your cut, anyway).

Have fun. The store is set up a little screwy, but you'll likely enjoy
wandering the aisles. You never know what you'll find. And on the way
back to Sandy Eggo, pull off at El Toro near the Laguna Hills Mall and
check out Trader Joe's. They're the "yin" to BF's "yang."
