I was miserable the first 8 Mother's Days or so without my mom.

Then one year, it occurred to me: It's a stupid made-up "Holiday"
anyway--why get upset over something that is actually quite meaningless,
just because it no longer applied to me? Now, I just go about my business
like it's any other day. Maybe go to the cemetary, if I feel I'll get
something out of it. I think last year, I released a helium balloon at the
beach, after saying a prayer. I do always acknowledge her in some way, even
if it's just to think about something nice we did together. But I learned,
after years of making myself miserable over it, that Mother's Day is NOT
worth getting all upset over.

Let's face it, Mother's day gets hyped up by the marketers who benefit from
it: Greeting Card manufacturers, florists, restaurants, retail stores, etc.

The 2nd Sunday in May is not some "magical" day when your Mom becomes more
important than any other day. It's just some day, randomly selected about a
hundred years ago, to honor mothers. (see below for link to history of
Mother's Day).

Once "Mother's Day" became just another Sunday in May to me, I am a much
happier person. Don't get me wrong, I still miss my Mom profoundly, even
after almost 15 years. But no more or less than I do on some random
Thursday in September.

I know how you feel. Moms make the world go 'round and are still worthy
of celebration on a daily basis, agreed.

I hear ya, Sheryl. I can't be bothered with the Hallmark holidays, from
Valentines to Secretaries day. Hey, I hardly ever even observe my own
birthday. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like anything that makes me feel
obligated to run to the store to get a card and mail it in time for the day.

Think of your mother whenever, give her a call, whatever, on any given
day. No need for a one special day that apparently upsets some people.

This reminds me of that mini-series (based on the book) "Lace" back in the
80's. It was on one of the cable channels yesterday....I tuned in just in
time for the best line in the entire movie: "Which one of you bitches is my
mother?"
Cheesy book, cheesier movie. But fun, in an over-the-top melodramatic way.

I think this is a very good way to look at things. I don't tend to
remember 'crucial' dates and anniversaries, but I never forget the people
such days are intended to celebrate.

It is a real revelation to me when I realized that I didn't have to put
the same importance on dates on the calendar that people around me did -
particularly people around me who will earn money by persuading me that I
must celebrate a date a particular way.

This year I took the Secretaries out...The Bosses were too cheap too. I
didn't have too but I do appreciate all the things they do around the
office. Anyways it was more fun without the bosses.

That's sad. Bosses should know better. If nothing else, we eat well at
work. There are lunches for special occasions, dinners for special
occasions, pizza for non-special occasions, coffee all day, doughnuts every
Friday Popsicles in the summer, and on and on..

Just last night there were 13 of us (spouses included) for dinner because
one of us is moving to Florida.

Good of you to pick up the slack and do the right thing.
