Smoothie newbie - CLICK HERE for the Cooking Forum Index
dotnw@hotmail.com
I want to buy a smoothie making machine, but I am unsure what can be
put in them. I don't really want to use fruit, as I have no problem
eating fruit whole. But I find vegetables a bit bland, so I am hoping
that a smoothie machine will make me want to consume more raw
vegetables - especially raw.

Can you just throw in most vegetables in to a smoothie machine?

Are there special vegetable smoothie recipes that taste particularly
good?

Thanks, regards, dnw.

Why not just a really good blender? Are the smoothie machines easy to clean?

What do you mean by a smoothie machine? I just use my blender.

I think you would need a juicer for vegetables.

Or a vitamix...

With a vitamix, you get to keep the fiber for a more "complete" food.

They are a bit pricey for my personal tastes, but I've heard nothing but
good about them!

OIC. As a newbie, perhaps I don't even know what hardware I need.

Here is what I was thinking:

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/s...clickfrom=image

Perhaps a blender is what I require.

My actual requirements are to turn raw vegetables in to a drink, but
without having the pulp discarded (like juicers do)

Thank you, regards, dnw.

AFAIK, Vitamix is the only "blender" that will do that.
It's expensive but if you want to invest in one, I'd recommend it.

I've seen them in action in demos and they are amazing!

They will even pulverize eggshell to a drinkable product!

Looks like a blender with a dispenser on the front. If I were you, I'd want
to see one right in front of me, along with the instruction manual, before I
put down my money. What's involved with cleaning the dispenser valve?

On the other hand, there's this:

http://www.cuisinart.com/cgi-bin/in...i?item_id=SPB-7

Haven't been able to kill mine yet. Produces perfect smoothies.

Oh my gosh - I've just seen the price for one of those things. Pity -
that's well out of my price range.

If I put a bunch of vegetables in to a cheaper smoothie or blender
machine, would the result not really be a liquid drink, but more of a
kind of thick undrinkable gravy/slurry?

(But what if I added water or something like that?)

Regards, dnw.

Looks very cool. So, when you throw a bunch of vegetables in, it makes
something that you can drink OK?

I use fruit, haven't tried vegetables. I was concerned that it would have
problems with fibrous stuff like mangoes & pineapples, but so far, no
problem. Not even any fibrous residue under the blade.

I don't see why not, depends on your aim... can even throw in whole
ears of corn, don't even have to shuck them... so long as you don't
turn on the machine.

Have you considered Beech Nut and Gerbers... buy a nice selection and
give em a test run... beets pureed with sour cream and lemon juice are
great.
