Lead paint is mainly a hazard if ingested. This can be by licking the
paint, eating paint flakes or inhaling paint dust from sanding the
surface.
It is not specificaly carcinogenic but high blood lead levels cause
developmental problems in children.
You can buy a test kit or your local health department may be able to
test it for you.
A chemical paint stripper is preferred for removal since it will not
cause dust.
