I saw a Red LeCreuset 7 1/4 qt. round dutch oven today for $130 (normally
$220) and I was going to buy it. It was labeled "seconds" by LeCreuset and
did not come in a box. Other than a very slight flat spot on the otherwise
round edge of the lid, I could see no other imperfection. Does anyone know
what they mean by "seconds"? Slight imperfection I assume. If it's that I
am going out later to pick it up as it seems a good bargain.

Seconds are generally products that have a cosmetic flaw that doesn't alter
the way the product is supposed to work. Sounds like an excellent deal--I'd
get it.

I've bought Le Creuset seconds on occassion during their semi-annual sales
(Yemassee, SC outlet store). The defects have always been cosmetic in
nature. Sometimes I've had difficulty telling what thing on an item
relegated it to the seconds section. Other times it's more obvious. I've
seen enamel defects, casting defects, and metal finishing defects after the
casting process. Sometimes the enamel defect might be an overspray of one
color on a two color piece. I'm thinking most if not all of the pieces are
marked in some way to indicate their seconds status, as once the item leaves
the inspector on the production line, it might be hard for others to tell.
Once you start using an item, it can really become hard to tell the scuffs
or scratches during production from those during use.

Unless something has changed recently, I believe the seconds come with the
same warranty as first quality Le Creuset goods. Not that I've ever had any
failures, but a coworker of mine once had a rectangular roaster crack on her
and they replaced it.

I bought a 5-quart Dutch oven "second" from Le Creuset's outlet store in
Yemasee, SC for $90 (retail $150), at least 10 or 15 years ago. I've never
been able to find anything wrong with it. If you can't see anything wrong,
then go for it.

According to the sales staff at the LeCreuset outlet store in Kittery,
ME the seconds only have cosmetic flaws. My French oven is a second,
the inside of the lid has a small spot where the enemel is a bit thin.

I have two of their seconds which turned out to be about 40% of the
regular retail price when I bought them at the discount outlet store
during one of their biannual sales (before Christmas and Mother's Day).
These stores have a regular "seconds" area and apply the sale discount
to the blemished or discontinued merchandise also.

I can't find a blemish on one (it may have been a discontinued color)
and the other has a tiny pit in the enamel which doesn't go all the way
down to the iron base.

Go for it!

What a deal, go back and get that dutch oven! I love all of my
LeCreuset seconds. Mine came from an outlet store in San Marcos, Texas.

Run back to that store and buy it NOW before someone else does. That's
an excellent deal. I have a Le Crueset oval baking pan that I use for
just about EVERYTHING. They are wonderful cooking utensils. my baking
dish is now so splattered, that you can barely tell what color it used
to be, so that little cosmetic imperfection will become less and less
of an issue as you use that dutch oven. =o)

Oh, I have a few more imperfections, but I will not tell what they
are... finding them is half the fun.

What is the other half of the fun, then?
