Confusion is my natural state! You got there later than I'm usually up and
talking. And I wouldn't dream of trying to cook Thanksgiving dinner for a
crowd so yep, I got lost. Thought it was just appetizer/snacky stuff for a
while since we were discussing "starters" for a bit.

Take a 3 inch cookie cutter to a mess of low carb torillas. Bake them in a
mini muffin pan to make tortilla cups/shells...Fill with a curried chicken
salad/spread. There all appetizered out.

That box always comes up. Try clicking on the URL above and you will

That's a prompt to install a Java applet. Just click NO; it should take you
to the page for connecting to chat.

We would LOVE to have you join us, Margaret! Next time Debbie is in town
ask her to install the mIRC client for you. It's shareware; make a small
contribution to register. It's much easier to use than the Web Interface.
I can tell her how to set it up.

Be warned, some people sign in and never leave (pet peeve of mine) so they
appear to be there but aren't really "there".

WARNED??? It's not like these are serial killers. One is the guy
whose computer is providing this service for us. One isn't a person.
It's a bot that provides cool stuff like your local weather and tiny
urls when someone enters a big url. The other one is Crash. You
already have two pets. You don't need a peeve as well.

Carol, wondering why she doesn't go into the channel anymore

Perhaps I should have said "Be aware"... no need to get yer squash in a
twist over this :) Crash hasn't been there the last few times I signed in.
I wasn't talking about Crash.

Margaret is not familiar with mIRC so she might not understand that the
others are signed in (the bot is identified as a BOT) but aren't really
there for her to chat with, that's all.

Don't worry about me. It just so happened that I saw the "invitation
to chat" several times when I awoke last week, as the weather was very
stormy and the rain and wind woke me up. Each time I clicked, I found
the warning and got off the page. I thought it was my computer, but
when I saw that I was not the only one, I wrote to tell you about it.

I go to sleep around nine in the evening and even if I got up in the
middle of the night, I would be too sleepy to try and talk.

If you say that I do not understand, believe me, I do not. I have no
idea what a bot or Bot is. As for chatting with people who are not
really there, that does not seem that strange. It has happened to all
of us at one time or another, it has to me. :o)

Thank you for your concern. Margaret

Margaret,

Anytime you are awake and want to chat, just send a note out to rfc.

It seems a lot of us have been doing that lately, and when we do so, a
lot of folks join in.

I think just before your bedtime might be the best time to get anyone
to chat, but you can try at any time, and see if someone is awake and
wanting to join in.

He's in there now. Having it broadcast that the people there aren't
really there has created this thing where people come into the channel,
say absolutely nothing, then leave. Just happened again. I think it's
rude.

Wasn't talking about you. You actually spoke. Unfortunately, Crash
was taking a nap when you came in.

Most people come in and just leave immediately. Crash is constantly
saying hi to people a fraction of a second after they've signed off.
It just gets frustrating.

Folks, type something when you come into the channel. If you don't,
Crash's mIRC button won't flash, and if he's in another window, and he
won't know you're there.

Frankly, I didn't read the "box"... so here's the low down: just say
*yes* and you'll get to rfc chat.

Hopefully my saying so didn't create the rudeness. I was just saying... you
know... I know Crash and I know kal and I know about the GoogleBot, but I
don't really know some of the other folks who occasionally sign in and just
sit there.

There is a problem with the web interface. People can't stay connected.
They come in then they are booted. Maybe they DO need to d/l the java
applet but it's not an application I recognize. Poor Karen tries and tries
again to get in and gets booted a LOT before she can say a word.

From looking at it briefly it's an IRC client running as
a java applet. It doesn't surprise me that it's not as stable
as a standard IRC client. Java applets can vary in performance
depending on the browser. Here's some info on the one you're
using.

http://www.pjirc.com/about.php

I don't know that downloading it and running it locally (i.e.
not in a browser) would be any better. You might try using a
regular desktop IRC client, that might be more reliable.
Here's a popular one, but there are many more.

http://www.mirc.com/

The IRC host you are using is irc1.penguinpowered.ca

I'm surprised that anyone can even get on the site without the java

Yup, that's how I get into the channel. What Jill was talking about,
though, was the java access through the WWW.

Do you ever visit the channel? I seldom go in there anymore.

I already have a java applet installed, just not that one; I've used the web
interface when I couldn't get in (to a different chat server/channel) using
mIRC and it worked fine.

Sorry Carol, I thought you were saying the java applet is
required(?) No matter.

I don't use IRC much except for work. I would definitely use
a desktop client over an applet though, as anyone who's
ever had to code client side java will tell you. The
other possibility is that the IRC server is a bit flaky.

(Also, you might want to explain to people that the initial
security warning is standard browser behavior when loading
certain java applets. It seems to be scaring some people
away.)

In that case, say NO... you'll get there anyway, but I can't guarentee
you'll be seen. When you enter via the web, you're a java user.

http://java.sun.com/applets/

An applet is a program written in the Java programming language that
can be included in an HTML page, much in the same way an image is
included. When you use a Java technology-enabled browser to view a
page that contains an applet, the applet's code is transferred to your
system and executed by the browser's Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
