With recent post about turkey fryers that reminded me to ask if any one
has used the electric counter top turkey fryer actually made for indoors
and their opinion.
It has been on market since last year and have kept putting of buying
one till I read some reviews. Now holidays are right around the corner &
no we don't have renters insurance.
TIA

i don't think it's impossible to safely deep fry a turkey in doors. i also think
it's a bad idea. you'd have to be very observant of oil temp, amount of oil, how
big the pot is, how much oil will the turkey displace etc... and that's the
stuff you can control. it's the stuff i can't control that scares me. like 5
gallons of 360f oil in my non commercial kitchen with guests running around. all
wanting to come and check out the deep frying turkey :P
get an extension cord and do it out side.

I've fried turkeys outdoors twice.
You can feel the ground beneath your feet rumbling from the power of
that much oil boiling with an entire turkey in it.
There is *NO ******* WAY* I'd even think about such an endeavor inside.

IMO, the electric cannot get up the heat needed to do a good job using a
household circuit. I'd pass on it.

Oh, boy. If I let my husband read that, he'd run right out and buy one of
those things (to use outdoors). He's already 90% sure he wants to get
one...the prospect of feeling the earth move would just seal the deal for
him. And I'd make him buy a great big padlock for our gate to keep our kids
away from the patio while he did it.

<holiday pedantic mode>
Note that at no time during this process is the oil boiling. The
water in the turkey you've just put in the oil, yes. But the oil
itself? No.
Long before the oil gets to boiling temperature, it'll smoke like
hell. If it actually boils, you'll have a grade-A fire on your hands.

That, however, I agree with.

You've posted here before so I'm not going to call you a troll right off the
bat. BUT...
NO WAY do you want to fry a turkey indoors. Plain and simple. Given your
post, you probably don't want to fry one outdoors, either. If you haven't
got the concept down pat, here it is: You are submersing a 10-12 lb. turkey
in oh, I dunno... a barrel of hot bubbling oil? Why would you want to
attempt this IN YOUR HOUSE?
You can fry turkey pieces like you do chicken, in batches, in a big cast
iron skillet. You cannot deep fry a whole turkey in your house.
Furthermore, why don't you have renters insurance? Not that it would cover
acts of stupidity, just asking.

I never had it either, Jill, and I know renter's insurance is really
inexpensive. I just never got it.

Well you know... I just came off a really *good* vacation and was glad to
find my apartment was still standing when I returned! But if it hadn't
been, all my stuff is insured :) Besides, the OP mentioned not having
insurance so of course I had to mention it ;)

It's very inexpensive and I wouldn't be without it, just as if I owned my
home I wouldn't be without homeowners coverage. But then I also wouldn't
think of deep frying a whole turkey indoors, insurance notwithstanding ;)

Insurance is so worth it, just for the peace of mind factor alone. Agreed.
You DO keep a video or photo record of the contents in a different place?

A friend of mine has a son old enough to be in the major leagues, baseball.
Too old to take her advice, of course. I mean, really, he's all growed up
and
he knows it all, right?
Well, he got called up to Washington, lucky him, he wasn't destroyed in
Katrina, but his place was. Guess you were right, mom, I should have gotten
renter's insurance. Lost all his stuff.

I gave a friend a gift and he put it in a lockbox at the bank. After a few
years overseas - perhaps not even receiving all his mail, I don't know,
informing him that the bank was closing -- he came back and the bank (a
MAJOR) had closed its doors. He doesn't know what they did with his
lockbox.
Don't go on vacation toooo looong --
