Snow! wonderful Snow.... - CLICK HERE for the Cooking Forum Index
Mr Libido Incognito
It's snowing here...I gots a 4 ft drift across my front sidewalk...Took a
day off from work because there was too much snow to drive thru without
getting stuck...

Hopefully the city will plow soon...Then I can get to the store and get the
stuff to make nancy's tortillia soup.

@@@@@ Now You're Cooking! Export Format

Nancy's Chicken Tortilla Soup

Soups/Chowders

1 medium onion chopped
2 stalks celery chopped
1 carrot; chopped
2-3 garlic cloves minced
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 4 oz can green chiles
1 15oz can italian herbed tomatoes chopped; with juice
4 cups chicken stock; 4 -6 cups
1 tsp lemon pepper use a strong brand
2 tsp worchester sauce
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp ground cumin powder
1/2 tsp hot sauce (to taste)
1/2 cup water
4 tbsp flour
1 lb chicken parts skinned and de-boned; I use thighs
1/3 cup sour cream; see note

In a heavy large dutch oven over medium heat soften the onion carrot and
celery in the oil. Add the minced garlic and cook about one more minute.
Add the green chiles and the chopped tomatoes, then add the chicken stock
and the seasoning. Simmer for about 20 minutes.

In a small bowl stir together the flour and water then add to soup. Simmer
5 minutes more.

Add the chopped chicken meat. Simmer about 5 minutes more.

stir in the sour cream and serve.

Best served with corn tortilla chips .

Note if you are going to freeze parts of this don't add the sour cream till
ready to serve. Sour cream doesn't freeze well.

PeeeUUUkkkeee... I could live forever and not miss snow. We usually don't
get it until around the end of January but sometimes... just sometimes we
get it early. 1 pretty snowfall at Christmas is about all I want.

<Nancy's soup recipe saved>

Well, the soup sounds great. Too damned warm here for soup or a fire in the
firplace today. I found some hot dogs in the freezer (been cleaning the
freezer out). It's going to be a Hebrew National night over here. I'll
grill them and serve some fries, baked beans and cole slaw on the side.

Well, the leaves here in high west Texas aren't turning quite yet. We may get
our first frost tonight, tho. Y'all forgot a sprinkle or three of cilantro on
top of the bowl! I'll just run outside and cut some. Mine doesn't seem to taste
much like soap.

What kind of chilies would these be?
I can only easily get preserved/pickled jalapeños here [Old El Paso], or
Turkish mild pickled long peppers, or the fresh [hot!] kind of green
chillie.
What would you recommend as a substitute? I guess it wouldn't be quite right
to leave them out altogether, and if they are pickled then fresh wouldn't be
appropriate either.

I agree with Michael. Snow should only fall on Christmas eve, like a
Noman Rockwell scene. And be gone by 9:00 a.m. Christmas day.

My senior trip was to the arctic circle on one of my Uncle Sam's
yachts. I HATE COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mind cold, it's the slush, snow and blizzardry I don't like. Your
trip to the Arctic Circle sounds like a great time to me. I want to go to
Ireland first and then Nepal for my next 2 overseas trips.

The standard...no heat chopped green chiles...found in a can (Old El Paso)
in these parts, but not green bell pepper or jalapeno

Doesn't say on the can. So I'm guessing at this and will say green chiles.
Maybe the French will help...Piments Verts...4.5 oz or 127ml

Ingredients listed on can: Green Chile Peppers, Salt, Water, Citric Acid,
Calicum Choride.

These are the standard green chiles found on/in burritos and
tacos...Excellent on eggs and nice in soups (sezs me)

They add a nice flavour but little to no heat to many dishes...kinda add
that Mexican flare/flavour without any heat...

Have I said they aren't hot?

Actually yes I am. I'm quite happy at home these days. I'm much more

I'm into regional artworks as well.

And up here in Central CA (coastal redwood mountains), we topped out at 77
this afternoon, with little or no wind. Lovely.

Snow is something one goes off TO for a day of play, then returns FROM to
more hospitable climes. I went ice fishing on the Mississippi River once.
Late December. Wisconsin. We didn't have an ice fishing hut, and it was
very, very cold.

Baja shrimp/fish tacos rock! Seriously.

It's near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Visit anytime.

The forest was planted in 1933 as part of the CCC project. It was rolling
pastures before that. From the right viewpoint you can see the trees were
planted in rows.

I'm sitting here doing homework with Ramsey on my lap. He's purring and
pondering the keyboard. I'm sure he'll jump on it and type as he pleases,
being the cyber kitten he is.

Anyway, I'm rethinking my snow aversion. I have not experienced much of it
the past couple of years, and have come to the conclusion it is one of
nature's miracles. Bring it on I say... Bring on the snow and take the
slush with ya' ;)

That's the best reason I know for moving from CA. Nothing worse than a mark
on the white sofa.

Pandora,

You're on top of the world over there! Very nice!

Here's one of my backyard from a few winters ago.

You wouldn't think so but it's actually a color photograph.

They're white pines. Do I fly? LOL!!! I'd need a ton of tinsel! It would
probably look great!!! I just fix up a small fake one in the house and
leave nature alone. ;)

After living on the west coast and Hawaii from 1964-1993, it had been quite
a while since I'd seen snow. Here is a picture of our first winter here
from inside the house. DH was desperate to get out, and it was 3 weeks
before we figured out how to get down our long driveway, even to the
mailbox. Our other vehicle at that time was 'my' Alfa Romeo convertible;
the truck was definitely not 4 x 4. We were NOT PREPARED for this change in
lifestyle. Tee - Hee.

Pandora, if you are referring to my truck/snow picture, we live here in the
USA. Here is another picture of the same yard in summer. Down below is
Toms Brook, named for the town we live in. Virginia is not a state, as some
would call it, but we refer to it as the "Commonwealth of Virginia." It has
to do with Virginia's type of government.
http://www.user.shentel.net/jar02/

Today is 71F and a little rainy. I am going to the library and town 30 miles
away to do some shopping, as tomorrow the high will be 41-46F and feel like
winter, so they say. I am not partial to summer months anymore, so winter
doesn't distress me. Bring it on!

Beautiful web page| and Shenandoah Valley is too beautiful for me (I like
very much nature)!!!! I Am so astonished for all the interests you have! You
know many languages (japanese, chinese, etc.). Why not italian? :((((
And you have made many voyages. Do you still travel?
Then I have seen that you love Van Gogh (like me) and Japanese artists. I
love Hokusai paintings!
You are a beautiful girl. I saw also when you were in the Air Force: did you
ever become an officer? My boyfriend is a lieutenant colonel in the Italian
Air Force.
And he happens to have a strong interest in the ACW. See his web site (if
you want):

There was absolutely nothing wrong with Scotland.
I spent about six months there ( a number of years ago) and the people
treated this young dumb American very well.

Until it gets to the point that it's so cold that you think "I could

Michael, I was in Nepal for 3 weeks in '87. Think twice. In Katmandu (I
don't know if it's different now) meat -- yes, I know it's a most Hindu or
Buddist country -- was sold with the meat laying barren on dirty
sidewalks -- cows wandering around as well clooooooose by. Shutter! Will
not relate other things as they would definitely be OT.
