Well, it was an interesting Thanksgiving. I got home last night from my
mom's house, where I visited for 5 days following her back surgery (she's
doing much better now, but her meds made her nauseous for a full week).
Found out that my husband had bought a turkey breast and some veggies,
wanting a quiet Thanksgiving day at home instead of going to his brother's
house.
We were pretty well supplied, but we kept it simple: just the roast turkey
breast, James Beard's stuffing (mmm.....butter!), green beans, pan-browned
brussels sprouts, homemade applesauce, and apple pie with fresh whipped
cream.
So this was not a tricky meal to cook, but the challenge was getting it all
made considering that we weren't home half the day. We (hubby, 3 kids, me)
walked up to a nearby school to play a morning game of kickball with some
other neighborhood families. After that, I snuck home and cooked for a
while (made the pie and applesauce, and prepped the stuffing). Then we went
to a neighbor's house to bounce on their trampoline for a while. Came home,
dumped exhausted toddler into crib for a nap, resumed cooking.
At dinner, my husband turned to me and said happily, "This is the best
Thanksgiving dinner I've ever had." He really liked the stuffing, Carol -
thanks! And he ate two pieces of pie, ugly crust and all.
Hope everyone's day was fun as well as tasty!

David and I had a wonderful meal. I spent the day cooking and doing dishes
which is my idea of happiness, he practiced his guitar, and the dogs ate
scraps and played together.
Dinner was lovely, we ate too much and we have too much cranberry sauce and
roasted root vegetables. The dogs got their special canned food and Frosty
Paws and I think it's a happy day all around in this newly formed household.

Did you have your Frosty Paws today? :-)
Our five cats had enough chopped turkey to put them asleep for the rest of
the day and evening, and I mean *sound* asleep. They only get fresh
turkey once or twice a year, so they get all they want. After dinner our
new puppy managed to steal a turkey wing and had eaten all the skin and
meat off of it before we caught her, just in time to keep her from also
eating the bone. Not a good thing for puppies.
A good day was had by all!

I *swear* ugly crust pies are the best. This year We did frozen pies and
they looked perfect... Gads, no one ate them. All is well though, we had
Bomb Pops in the freezer. 2 boxes. They have the Splenda stuff in them and
were a huge hit. Screw my whipped cream which I was NOT going to do and
bought frozen thankyouverymuch.
I mean seriously, I'm thinking of just opening the kitchen up and letting
them go after it next year. Some are on this diet or that, others want
this or that. Atkins Diet seems to be the theme this year.
We made the turkey and ham with all the sides. I don't even know what
people ate. Different people took different leftovers. All I know is, the
damned sink and disposal went out. Thankfully it was afterwards.

I worked Wednesday night and I was expecting my hubby to go get all the
stuff for Thanksgiving when he got off of work. He called me while I was at
work saying he was stuck in a major traffic jam. He called me a couple of
hours later to tell me that the car broke down and he was stuck on the
freeway. There was nothing *I* could do to help him and I don't have a car
anyway. This is our sole vehicle.
A few hours later a towtruck was called and he got home around 10:30 pm.
(He leaves for work around 5:30 am. It was a long day for him.)
Turkey day morning, the car started and he went to go get groceries. He had
to go out twice.
(We ended up smoking a turkey on our WSM and the side dishes were, green
bean casserole, cornbread stuffing, kale greens, roasted garlic mashed
potatoes (I used 5 heads of garlic), cranberry sauce and steamed asparagus.
No dessert, the hubby and I never eat that stuff.)
Anyway, our beloved 1984 Toyota Pickup truck with almost 300,000 miles on it
is just about dead and I have no idea what we're gonna do. I *wish* the
only problem we had was a garbage disposal, but, heck! We don't even have a
garbage disposal! LOL. I have to laugh, what else can you do?

I hope you and Crash had a good one. We did although I was stressed with
the bird and ham. I have to thank Steven on this. He was a doll. He saw my
stress and took it over. It went well considering the different theme
diets of the guests.
I liked the babies the best. The kids are the greatest. I love the babies
at holiday time I just adore 'em.

About 3 years ago our beloved 1985 Chevrolet crew-cab (4 door) needed some
major work done, so we just got a new engine. It had 185,000 miles on it at
the time. We just can't let go of the darlin'. Consider fixing it up.
We've not regretted it.

Good thing you know chicken wings aren't good for dogs! Bet the puppy was
happy, though!
My dog Sampson (RB) got hold of a ham bone once (actually, I think my
ex-husband gave it to him). Now that's a big bone... the dog weighed about
8 lbs at the time, but try to get that bone away from him. You'd have
thought he was a Rottweiler! "GRRRRRRR, NO, MY BONE!" For a small dog he
had huge teeth. He knew how to use them, too.

Can you fix the truck up? I'm going to hang onto my Jeep forever if I can.
I have no idea what a Toyota pickup costs these days. Probably a lot. We
hate spending money on a new vehicle. I just hate it buying a new one, I
literally get physically ill. Seriously, I got sick and puked, right there
on the showroom floor. We always pay for vehicles with cash, no
financing. I remember the idiots at the dealership were completely
dumbfounded with a cash purchase and my sickness. I just see the final
bill and gag. Spending that much cash is sickening but financing would be
worse.

I brought that up to my hubby today and he said it's not worth it. The body
of the truck is so rusted out. We're going to have to get a new vehicle,
but we can't pull it out of the tub drain. (Was gonna use a body part, but
this is a family forum, after all.) When and if we do get another vehicle,
it's just going to be weird, you know? This was the truck we had when we
fell in love....... sigh. Oh, the memories!

We've got to keep it going as long as we can, Michael. We don't have any
means of financing and we don't have any money saved up. To get a "new"
vehicle would cost about $2000. NOT GONNA HAPPEN! So, we're just gonna
have to make do as long as possible. Besides the costs, it's the memories
involved in a car! When you get rid of one, it's almost like a death in the
family, isn't it?

One of my dogs got a bone from the rack of lamb I made one night. Everyone
kept telling me it was okay, he couldn't actually break the bone. I had to
point out that this dog ate through a Kong toy! He cracked that bone open in
seconds and I made David fight it away from him.

I paid cash for my car before the one I have now (and it's already paid off,
too). The salesman looked like *he* was going to puke when I told him I was
paying cash. :-o)
Never buy a used vehicle. Plop down some money and endure the financing if
you must, but then pay it off as quickly as possible. Used cars are just
someone elses headache.

Personally I'd invest the $2000 in a new engine. I don't know how much
they cost. The "check engine" light keeps going on in my Jeep. I don't
think I need a new engine yet but I may need some major maintenance. I'll
have the maintenance done. It's much better than the $25+grand to replace
it. It's a Limited too, I'm sure they cost much more than what I payed for
it too. I don't even think my Jeep is made any longer. Gawd... I hope it
hangs on. I'll be traveling with cat in it.

Yeah, but where are we gonna get the $2000 FROM? That's the stickler. If
we had $2000, we'd buy another vehicle. We don't have credit cards, heck,
we don't even have a checking account. We live paycheck to paycheck and
we're still paying child support for Allan's kid. It's pretty slim around
here. BUT, we're as happy as a groundhog who hasn't been displaced in Feb.

I've had new and used. For me, it has been about half-and-half as far as
headaches go.
Buying a car is a stressful decision. We were freaking about our last
purchase a few years ago. The gal inherited it from her grandmother in
another state. She was nervous as we were. It took about a month of
dickering (not over price) before it was settled. But for me the trouble
hardly compares to putting up with a car salesman and the dealership.

Oh, I hate them too Dee Dee. I think they are the worst for making it easy
to purchase. Actually, last time I went in was to get rid of Steven's
Buick. He was using my Jeep so much I never got to drive it and his Buick
was like 11 years old and falling apart. I took the Buick in and brought
his Jeep home. I told him I was test driving it.Well he took it for a spin
<evil grin> and went in to pay for it the next day. It was the hassle of
the year.

5 HEADS!? Not 5 cloves?
We do like garlic at our house. We used a whole head (separated and
peeled) in the brine for the turkey. That took us down to only a couple
of heads. My wife was at Costco anyway today, so she bought a 3 pound
bag.

I agree with you, Jill. However, most of us have been in a position in
life where that just isn't going to happen. If you don't have the
money, the income or the credit, a new car isn't a concept.

Here's a tip: Go look at the cars just when the dealership is closing.
Everything they have on the lot is sitting outside. Around here (at least)
they aren't enclosed behind chain link fences with Rotties standing guard.
You can still walk around, read the stickers, look at the features. If one
of the salespeople happens to be more concerned with talking to you than
running home (or to the bar) you can bet they won't spend much time.
Do your calculations and then go back when they are open and tell the SOB
salesman you know exactly what you want, spare me the hype, these are my
terms, here's what I'm willing to pay. It works :)
What kills me is every car salesman doesn't believe I want a standard shift.
5-speed and YES, I can drive a clutch. Dammit, stop showing me automatics.
OB Food: Had a butcher try to do the same thing, like, "Little missy, you
don't know what you're talking about. You don't want the bone-in rib roast,
you want the boneless." No, I want the bones. No, you don't. YES, dammit,
I want the bones! STFU and give me the roast I asked for! :)

I concur, Dan. But after throwing good money after bad on used cars for a
couple of years I figured you know what? Might as well throw that money at
a new one instead. Complete with a warranty.

Honey, will you help me buy my next car? Please???

Yep, ditto here. And they were astonished that I wanted a truck.

At least you have a butcher with whom you can debate. It's hard to
find a proper butcher anymore. There's one chain store of which I'm
aware that still employs butchers, and a few independents. One has to
search to find em in these parts.

I heard that Taylors, over in Sacramento is a good place for meat. I
go the impression, from what I read on eGullet, and Chowhound, that is
has butchers. I could be wrong on that though...
I am coming over that way some day soon to check it out.

I know that you can save money on used cars that are returned leases.
They have a repair history, often, and reasonable mileage, usually. They
come with very good warrantees, too, from the manufacturer. They've
been gone over by the mechanics, too.
Still not cheap, no car is anymore.

HAHAHA!! I have a rottie. Rotties don't "stand guard." They're just
waiting for people to show up and pet them.

It helps if you are partial to a particular make of vehicle, and go to
the same dealership every time.
We're working on our third Nissan truck. We buy from a nice Nissan
dealership here in Ontario. They don't rip you off on the purchase,
and we've been pleased as punch with the service department. (They
make all their money on service, so they don't want pissed-off
customers going elsewhere.) The salesman and the service guys know us
by name.
There's never any discussion of automatic transmissions or minivans,
and I *always* get a free loaner when I need one.

I agree. I keep my cars a "while". When they start costing me the
payment of a new car each month just to keep them running, it's time
for a new car with a new car warrenty.

I tend to keep my cars at least 10 years. I tried buying a couple of used
cars after my first new one (bought in 1984) in an attempt to save money.
It just didn't work out in terms of "saving" in the long run.
