Sheldon, what do you run thru your grinder to clean it? I have used the hot
water tap but I'm sure there is more I can do. Thanks.

I've used stale bread and it works okay. I still have a greasy residue.

What kind of a meat grinder are you talking about? The only two I'm
familiar with are the attachment for the Kitchenaid mixer and the old
fashioned hand cranked one that comes in various sizes. I put the parts for
both in the dishwasher.

Would it improve results to run ice cubes through first?

There aren't all that many parts to a meat grinder, regardless which.
Naturally if it's electric you're not going to submerge the motor
portion. The only parts to clean are the body, the auger, the plate,
the blade, and the retaining nut (five parts). All should be washed by
hand with hot sudsy water, rinse, and dry. The plate will normally be
of hardened tool steel and should be lightly coated with cooking oil to
prevent rust. These days most grinder employ a stainless steel blade,
but if of tool steel then oil that prior to storage too. There's no
rule that the grinder can't be cleaned in a dishwasher but I don't
recommend placing carbon steel , aluminum, die cast, or tinned parts in
the dishwasher. It shouldn't take more than three minutes to clean a
grinder by hand, no one can be that lazy they need to use a dishwasher
to clean five measly parts.

If the dishwasher is already half full, there's no reason not to put those 5
parts in there too.

Yes, really hot soapy water. Although I dry it thoroughly, I also put all
the metal parts in a 200 degree oven for 15-20 minutes to insure that it's
dry. My grinder is tinned cast iron and there are a few small areas that
are not tinned. I don't want to risk rust. I also rub those surfaces with
a bit of oil on paper towel.

I always clean mine by hand regardless of the state of the dishwasher ;) I
don't know why, I just do. It's like the big pots. I always hand wash
them even if there is room for them in the dishwasher. I think it's
because I get to use the bitch factor afterwards ;) I can bitch about doing
"the dishes" <G>

Hi, I run bits of raw fish through mine to clean itl Salmon works best,
although,
chicken does a good job too.

Never Use hot water, as this will kill
the germs.

We need the germs to make good food.

I have to agree with Sheldon on this one. Dishwasher instructions usually
advice against putting their use for aluminium. I used to have a nice polished
aluminium ice cream scoop until someone insisted on sticking it into the
dishwasher. Now it is badly pitted.
